DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Travelers on Spirit Airlines passing through the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport can now try out a new self-bag drop, which uses biometric photo-matching to bypass working with an agent.

Six of the new bag drops have been installed in Evans Terminal. DTW marks the sixth airport to incorporate the technology, following Atlanta, Chicago O’Hare, Dallas Ford Worth, Los Angeles, and Orlando.

“Its arrival in Detroit is an exciting first for DTW,” said Jason Fogelman, Senior Director of Airport Innovation, Standards and Training at Spirit Airlines, in a press release. “We thank the Wayne County Airport Authority for their partnership and support in launching self-bag drop at DTW.”

Customers will tag their own bags after checking in at the kiosk and may then choose whether to opt in when prompted by the self-bag scanning device. IDs are scanned and matched with a facial scan captured by the device, which allows customers to weigh in bags and pay for any additional services required.

The device can recognize and authenticate more than 50,000 forms of ID from nearly 200 countries.

Spirit says the system, which has been recognized by multiple innovation awards, should take just 70 seconds to check customers in, reducing bag drop processing time by 30%.

“We are always looking for ways to improve the customer experience at DTW and Spirit’s self-bag drop units align perfectly with our aim to take the stress out of travel,” said Chad Newton, Chief Executive Officer of the Wayne County Airport Authority, in a press release. “We’re proud to have invested in the construction of the self-bag drop units to streamline our passengers’ check-in process and give them more power over their travel experience.”
