ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Progress reports are in at some Michigan universities and they indicate record enrollments for the 2023 school year.
The University of Michigan Ann Arbor’s campus set a record for the largest enrollment for a public university in the state according to officials.

“Our record enrollment demonstrates that students from all backgrounds are continuing to see the value in a University of Michigan education,” Adele Brumfield, UM’s vice provost for enrollment management, said in a statement. “U-M is a place of educational excellence that features a vibrant community with rewarding student life experiences, access to innovative facilities and research and a caring and engaged faculty and staff.”
From 2022, the university’s total enrollment rose 2%, reaching 52,065 students. Additionally, the school’s undergraduate enrollment rose 3% to 33,730 since last year. U.S. News & World Report ranks UM #21 in the nation in the 2024 edition of Best Colleges is National Universities.
UM’s longtime rival, Michigan State University, came just behind the title for highest number of students at a public university, topping the enrollment scales at more than 51,000 students.
“It is exciting to see campus come alive again as we welcome students back for another academic year,” Interim MSU President Teresa K. Woodruff, Ph.D. said in a statement. “MSU is an institution grounded in providing a world-class education with dedicated faculty and staff that will simultaneously challenge students and be an advocate for them on their academic journeys.”
According to MSU, this year also marks the highest diversity of any preceding year, bringing together Spartans from all 50 states, every Michigan county, and 130 unique countries.
“As we embark on another exciting academic year, I am encouraged by the diversity within this student body,” MSU Board Chair Rema Vassar, Ph.D said. “With diversity comes discovery and opportunity — working in tandem to eliminate barriers and obstacles for students, academically and socially. I wish all of our students a successful academic year and journey ahead.”

According to the U.S. News & World Report, MSU ranks #60 in the latest national report on best universities in the country.
