EAGLE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – More than 560 signatures were turned in to the Clinton County Clerk this morning that were on a petition to recall Eagle Township Supervisor Patti Schafer over her handling of the megasite development in Clinton County.

412 signatures are needed to put the measure on the ballot for the November election but the group that opposes the megasite development, which the state calls the 1200+ acre Michigan Manufacturing Innovation Campus (MMIC), was able to get many more signatures than were needed.

The petition to recall Schafer was drafted by Eagle Twp. resident Troy Stroud because Schafer signed a non-disclosure agreement about the large-scale development which limited the information that was available to the township’s residents that are affected by the potential development.

In a previous article, we reported that the petition organizers were diligently collecting valid signatures by comparing them to a list of voters in the township and asking signers to present ID to prove that they lived in the township.

According to the recall procedures of the county, the county will have seven days to complete the preliminary review of the petition and then may forward to the local Clerk for registration checks. Within 22 days after the petition filing, the County or local Clerk completes registration checks. No later than 30 days after the petition filing, the officeholder can file challenges against petition signatures. No later than the 35th day after petition filing, the County Clerk determines whether there are sufficient valid signatures on the petition. If the petition is found to be sufficient, the Clinton County Clerk shall call the special election.

Meanwhile, on July 19th, Schafer will appear before a judge concerning her appeal over being recalled. Cori Feldpausch, administrator of the Facebook page “Stop the Mega Site, Eagle, MI” says about the appeal and the recall effort, “It will then be up to the judge to decide if the recall is to proceed or not. I am just happy that we were given the chance to turn in the 500+ signatures we collected. I think these signatures are a very good indication of how many in Eagle are not supportive of Supervisor Schafer’s decisions and actions regarding the potential Mega MMIC project. Maybe it’s time for a change? If this goes forward that is a decision that each voting resident will be able to make.”
