LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan State Police are cracking down on people driving company cars and those who spend most of their work day on the road.
Sunday marks the start of “Operation Safe Driver.” That means more law enforcement will be on the roads looking for reckless drivers and dangerous behavior behind the wheel in order to prevent deadly crashes.
As of June 30, drivers in Michigan can no longer hold their cell phone in their hand when driving and must use hands free devices instead. Officers said cell phone use, lack of seat belts, and following too close are some of the biggest problems they spot.
In addition, commercial vehicles pose an extra risk since they can weigh up to 164,000 pounds. The weight makes it difficult for these vehicles to stop quickly.
