Adam Bump, upland game-bird specialist with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Wildlife Division, said spring 2023 turkey prospects look good.
“We expect to see a continuation of having high success rates and high hunter satisfaction, along with lots of opportunity,” he said.
The Michigan DNR just announced the opening for hunters in Michigan to apply for licenses for a chance at securing this bird until August 1.
There are several options for hunters to apply for a Fall 2023 Turkey license, including: a $5 online application at eLicense, at any location that sells DNR licenses, or via the Michigan DNR Hunt Fish app.
“When applying, enter your email or phone number to be automatically alerted of drawing results Aug. 14,” the DNR encourages.
The northern portion of Lower Michigan offers more public turkey hunting opportunities than the southern part of the state according to Bump who also said that hunting in the Upper Peninsula is still good.

According to Dr. Russ Mason, the Michigan DNR Executive in Residence at Michigan State University, In the spring, the DNR sells about 100,000 licenses to hunters who report a slightly better than 40% success. In the fall, the DNR sold roughly 26,000 licenses to 25,000 people reporting less than 40% success.
While the option is available, only about 6% of fall turkey hunters purchase more than one license according to Mason.
While the bag limits and other relevant Fall Turkey hunting information and regulations is available here, it’s important for hunters to note that a fall Turkey license permits one Turkey harvest, either sex, and more than one license can be purchased until quotas are met.
