DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – After nine innings of shut out pitching from Detroit’s Tarik Skubal and Reese Olson, reliever Tyler Holton gave up the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning as the A’s won, 1-0, on the 4th of July. Skubal went four innings with six strikeouts and no hits followed by five innings from Olson who allowed just one hit with five strikeouts.

Holton came in the top of the 10th to start the inning as a runner is placed on second base. A sacrifice bunt sent the runner to third and then a strikeout put two outs in the inning. The A’s Ryan Noda singled to left field for only Oakland’s second hit of the game bringing in the only run of the game. The next batter grounded out to end the inning.

Detroit followed in the bottom of the 10th with a ground out and a strikeout before a walk made it with two runners on and two outs. Spencer Torkelson flew out to centerfield to end the game as the A’s won only their 24th game of the year.

Tigers’ manager A.J. Hinch said, “I think there were seven at-bats that could have changed the game, and we got two walks. I hate this loss, because we pitched so well and we had every chance to win the game.”

Skubal was Detroit’s best starter in 2022 but was sidelined with an injury last year. He has been working his way back with stops at Class A and Triple-A before his start on Tuesday. Retiring the first 11 batters of the game with six strikeouts before hitting a batter in the fourth. He says, “I’m healthy and it was fun to go out there and compete. The goal was to come out of this feeling good and I do.”

Miguel Cabrera and Matt Vierling each had two hits as the team only posted six the entire game.

The two teams will play again on Wednesday at 6:40 p.m.
