With many Michiganders swimming, boating, and kayaking this week during the Fourth of July holiday, it’s the perfect time to acknowledge its sensitive ecosystem with “Aquatic Invasive Species Awareness Week.” Here’s how residents can safeguard Michigan’s lakes:

  • Before and after entering the water, clean boats and trailers by removing plants and mud.
  • Dispose of waste in a trash bin located away from the lake.
  • Allow boats and equipment to dry for five days before launching them into a different location.
  • Sanitize live wells using a bleach solution.

Michigan residents are legally required to remove all aquatic organisms from watercraft and trailers. Before transporting, they must remove all drain plugs and drain all water from bilges, ballast tanks and live wells.
