GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – There are lists all over the place for things like cities with the most mosquitos, cities with the best beaches and cities with the worse drivers. Many of them are self-marketing tools like having an insurance company doing a list of worst drivers.

Recently, I came across LawnStarter who had a list of the best cities for naked biking. Are people actually Googling this?

I’m not sure why Lawn Starter even decided to do this study since they are a lawn care service. Nevertheless, they have a top 200 list with Grand Rapids coming in at #68 and Detroit placing 140th.

The metrics used in this survey included comparing the 200 biggest U.S. cities based on five categories. They looked at naked biking events, local interest in nude cycling, bikeability, and legal bumps in the road (like public nudity laws), among 11 total metrics.

Yes, I’m serious.

Ending up at the top of the list if you’re looking for a summer destination, other than Michigan where you can throw caution (and your clothes) to the wind while riding your bike are Philadelphia, Portland, Seattle and New York.

If you’re looking for the cities with the most nudists per 100,000 residents (and who isn’t?) then Orlando, Miami and Atlanta are good spots to check out.

I’m a little mystified though about this whole thing since I have always assumed that riding your bike naked in public is a crime – not that I’ve ever looked into it.

Until now.

While doing research, I looked up bicyclist safety information on the Michigan State Police’s Michigan’s Office of Highway Safety Planning page and saw nothing mentioned about bicycling naked so I reached out to the MSP for more information on the laws of riding your bike nude in Michigan.

Lori Dougovito, Public Affairs Representative with the MSP responded, “Despite the safety concerns in riding a bicycle without a proper helmet or sufficient clothing to reduce the risk of serious injury or ‘road rash’ in the event of a crash, the Michigan Vehicle Code (MVC) does not expressly prohibit the operation of a “bicycle” without a helmet or clothing. However, MCL 750.335a does generally prohibit a person from knowingly making ‘any open or indecent exposure of his or her person or of the person of another.’”

She continued, “Determining whether an ‘open or indecent exposure’ has occurred in a specific instance, whether on a bicycle or otherwise, would depend on the particular facts and circumstances surrounding the exposure and any decision to criminally prosecute for such violation would left to the discretion of local prosecuting officials. Questions regarding potential enforcement of such violations in a particular area should be directed to the prosecuting official in that area.”

So I guess the bottom line is: proceed at your own risk. Which you should be doing if you are bicycling naked anyway.
