DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Detroit went after one of the Thompson twins that played for Overtime Elite selecting Ausar Thompson. Ausar’s brother, Amen, went fourth to Houston as the Pistons took Ausar with the fifth pick.

“I found out when they said the name and I didn’t know I was going to get drafted by the Pistons. I saw cameras coming my way and thought maybe I am,” Thompson said. “I am super excited to get drafted by the Pistons. I am just happy to be a Piston for sure.”

Thompson played this last year for the Overtime Elite, a professional league for players between the ages 16 to 20 based in Atlanta, Ga., with his brother Amen. The two of them led the City Reapers to the league championship as Ausar hit the game winning three-pointer for the win in game three.

A 6-foot-7 forward, Thompson played two years for Overtime Elite and is from Oakland, Calif. In 14 of the 16 games played this year, he scored in double digits with 20 or more points in four games. He was the Finals MVP for the second straight year, was the regular season MVP, and averaged 16.3 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. He prepped at Pine Crest School in Florida where he won a state championship. His family moved to Florida when he was in the 8th grade.

“I thought there was connection and chemistry (when he visited with the Pistons). I like what they were talking about the direction they were going as a team. I thought they were the perfect place for me.”

Thompson will join the young talent of former no. 1 overall pick Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey to go along with youthful centers in Jalen Duren, James Wiseman, Isaiah Stewart, and Marvin Bagley. Thompson will have to work on his jump shot from what has been reported by scouts but is a strong defender and a remarkable athlete.

With the addition of new head coach Monty Williams, Detroit’s future is bright.
