“I think all in all, falling behind and still maintaining our discipline, drawing a couple of walks, trying to work the ball to the middle, we drove the ball to the opposite field … a lot of guys did some good things,” said Detroit manager A.J. Hinch.

Matthew Boyd went six innings recording eight strikeouts for his fourth win of the year giving up the four earned runs early in the game. Will Vest, Jason Foley, and Alex Lange pitched the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings shutting down the Twins as each pitcher recorded a strikeout.

Vierling was 3-of-3 for one RBI as Torkelson and Javier Baez added two hits. Torkelson and Baez also gave Detroit two RBI as Short and Eric Haase added one each.

Detroit took the early 1-0 lead in the second inning on a Vierling single. Minnesota did all their scoring in the second inning for the three-run lead, 4-1. A double play in the fourth allowed one run to come in for Detroit and then the three-run fifth inning put the Tigers ahead, 5-4. Baez tied the game with a triple bringing in two runs and Haase grounded out giving Detroit the one-run lead. The two doubles by Torkelson and Short in the ninth put the game away for Detroit.

The two teams will meet again on Friday night at 8:10 p.m. in Minnesota.
