DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Two mothers from the Detroit area say their children found box cutters instead of toys in their McDonald’s Happy Meals.

“Anything could have happened, and that’s what’s scary,” said Dawn Paret, whose family visited McDonalds on Sunday afternoon in Warren. Her seven-year-old daughter made the dangerous discovery.
“She opened up the box looking for the toy, and [Paret’s husband] was getting the two-year-old set up. She turned around, looked at him, and said ‘Dad, what is this?’”
Paret alerted the police, who are now investigating.
“The amount of worry and rage that went through me — I have never experienced,” Paret wrote in a social media post. “Simply saying, a happy meal box is your “catch all” and someone must’ve accidentally grabbed that one is not the answer I want.”
Kayla Almashy said the same thing happened to her just three weeks ago at a McDonald’s on West Grand River in Brighton. She received a Happy Meal for her daughter from the drive-through window.
“And my baby, like she always says, ‘mama, will you open my toy?’ And so she went to give me the toy, and when I grabbed it, it was a box cutter,” Almashy said. She reported the incident to management and said she was offered a free cookie or apple pie as compensation.

Almashy posted a photograph of the bright yellow CrewSafe box cutter on Facebook with the caption: “So this incident happened Saturday I went through McDonald’s drive-through off grand river and Challis Road in Brighton. I just want to make other parents aware to check their happy meal boxes because my daughter handed me a box cutter that was in her happy meal box thinking it was a toy!!!!”
“I just can’t even imagine if it was a little one or a child with special needs who tried ripping open their ‘toy’ this could have been so much worse,” she added in the comment thread.
In an email statement, McDonalds said they are continuing to investigate the incidents.
