DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Spencer Torkelson was the ‘hero of the night’ on Monday as he singled in Andy Ibanez for a 6-5 win over Atlanta. The win breaks a nine-game winning streak and is Detroit’s first win in June.
“This is huge, because the last 10 days haven’t been much fun. We’ve felt in all 10 of these games that we were never out of it. Tonight, the pitching staff did a great job and there were a couple of defensive plays that kept us in it. We just kept chipping away,” said Torkelson.

Three pitchers worked the first nine innings for five strikeouts and the no decision as Mason Englert started the game going 2.2 innings. Garrett Hill followed with 2.2 innings of work as Tyler Alexander went 3.2 innings. Alex Lange received the win pitching the 10th inning recording a ground out and double play for a 1-2-3 inning and is now 4-2 on the year.
Torkelson went 3-of-6 with three RBI and a home run. Javier Baez, Zack Short, and Matt Vierling all had two hits. Short added two RBI while Ibanez had one RBI.
Detroit was down 4-0 after six innings before mounting their comeback. Ibanez homered in the seventh inning for the first run. Atlanta added another run in the eighth for a 5-1 lead. In the eighth inning, Short singled in Baez to pull within three, 5-2. A three-run ninth inning tied the game at nine. Jonathan Schoop started the ninth with a single and Torkelson followed with a 440-foot home run as Detroit was now down one, 5-4, with no outs. Carpenter followed with a single but a strikeout and a ground out brought Vierling up. He singled to right field as Short followed with a single as Maton came in to tie the game. A strikeout ended the inning but Detroit pushed it to extra innings tied at five.
After a quick top of the 10th inning, Detroit made quick work for the win. Ibanez started off at second base and was sacrificed over to third base by Rogers but a throwing error kept Rogers on base. After Schoop lined out, Torkelson took an 0-1 count to centerfield for the win.
The two will play again on Tuesday night at 6:40 p.m.
