DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Headed to the ninth inning with a 5-3 lead, Detroit’s relief pitching fell threw again in June giving up four runs in a 7-5 loss to Arizona. It is the ninth straight loss for Detroit in June.
Jason Foley came in relief in the ninth to shut down Arizona but the opposite happened. After a ground out to start the inning, Foley gave up a single and then a walk before another single brought in the first run. The second out came on a fly out to right field but Arizona recorded a double scoring two runs and then had another single to make it 7-5 before recording the third out.

Alex Lange, the normal closer, was brought in the bottom of the seventh to get the final out. He went into the eighth where he gave up one run before Tyler Holton finished the inning as Detroit held a 5-3 lead before the ninth inning meltdown.
Detroit’s manager A.J. Hinch said, “I didn’t want to use Lange in the seventh, but they had Emmanuel Rivera up, and he crushes lefties. I knew we needed a strikeout, and he’s the most equipped, plus we had Foley for the ninth.”
Kerry Carpenter went 3-of-4 with a run scored as Jake Marisnick had two hits and one RBI. Zac McKinstry added two RBI while Javier Baez and Nick Maton both had a RBI.
Detroit took a 1-0 lead in the first on a Maton ground rule double as Carpenter scored. Arizona took the lead in the second on a home run but a Baez sac fly in the third and a Marisnick double in the fourth put Detroit up 3-2. McKinstry finished the fourth inning with a two-run homer for the three-run lead, 5-2. Arizona added a run in the eighth and then four in the ninth to take the game and series.
The Tigers will host Atlanta on Monday night at 6:40 p.m. in a three-game series.
