LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) may expand the list of nuisance animals to include a lot of neighborhood critters.

Last week the DNR said it wants to add beavers, cottontail rabbits, opossums, weasels, muskrats, fox squirrels, gray squirrels, red squirrels, and ground squirrels to the list of animals that can be killed without a permit. The DNR says all of the animals are damaging land across the state. Currently, Michigan’s nuisance list includes just woodchucks, skunks, raccoons, and coyotes.
There is some opposition to the updated list, including from tribal leaders who say the animals play an important part in their culture. The DNR is scheduled to meet again on the issue next week.
