LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Michigan Republican Party is looking to shake things up next year as it considers replacing its open 2024 presidential primary with a closed caucus or convention.

In other words, the closed session would only allow precinct delegates or vetted Republicans to participate rather than have registered voters head to the polls.

Michigan GOP Party Co-chair Kristina Karamo told reporters earlier this week, “All things are on the table right now” and admitted there are various issues “up in the air.”

Michigan’s newly minted Democratic-controlled Legislature approved legislation shortly after taking the reigns in January and moved the primary date from the second week in March to February 27. This came in conjunction with national Democratic leadership shifted around the calendar and made Michigan fifth among early-voting states.

The Michigan GOP must start laying out plans now. Under RNC rules, each state has until October 1 to inform the national party of its primary or caucus plans. The RNC would then issue any penalties by December.
