DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – A familiar face will be returning to Detroit for the 2023 season as the Lions signed veteran Marvin Jones, Jr., to a one-year contract. Jones, Jr., was with Detroit for five seasons from 2016-2020.

“Really, it was an easy choice. Seeing familiar faces and giving everybody daps and hugs, it was like, dang, this was my home for five years,” said Jones. “If I’m not going to play on the West Coast, the only team that I will go play for that’s not on the West Coast is Detroit.

Jones, Jr., signed a one-year deal worth up to $5 million on Wednesday afternoon. He joins free agents that use to be former Lions back to Detroit in offensive lineman Graham Glasgow and special teams player Jalen Reeves-Maybin.

He went on to say that he really loves the Lions’ coaching staff and front office and the culture that is being built in Detroit. He loved that the front office and head coach Dan Campbell made it clear in free agency that they wanted him in Detroit.

Last year, Jones, Jr. caught 46 passes for 519 yards and three touchdowns for Jacksonville. He started his career with Cincinnati after a strong collegiate career at Cal. After Cincinnati, he signed a five-year $40 million deal in 2016 with Detroit where he went on to catch 289 passes for 4,296 yards. He left with 36 touchdown catches which is third all-time behind Calvin Johnson and Herman Moore.

“This is place is home for me,” said Jones, Jr. “I belong here. I’ve always belonged here.”

He will be wearing the “0” number becoming the first Lions player in the Super Bowl era to do so after the NFL changed the rules this year.
