SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – And the winner is, The Edwin H. Gott.

The Gott, one of the thirteen thousand-footers that sale the Great Lakes, was the first to make it to Sault Ste. Marie around Noon Thursday, and will be the first to sale through the Locks to officially open the season at midnight Friday.

What has become a bragging right moment for captains and their ships, being the first ship through the Soo Locks, is met with fan-fare.

This Friday at 1pm, members from the Sault Area Chamber of Commerce, Convention and Visitors Bureau, and other city dignitaries, will board the ship to present the Captain with a plaque and well wishes on the new season.
