LANSING, Mich. (MIRS News) – The Michigan Democratic Party (MDP) was fined $27,000 by the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) for bringing in $154,401 in excessive contributions in 2020.

The party was found to have collected more than the allowed $10,000 from 29 different individuals and $2,500 from one multi-candidate committee.

MDP contends the excessive contributions were inadvertent and were caused by the aggregation of contributions from joint fundraising activities.

The party refunded the excessive contributions, but they came after the FEC’s 60-day deadline.

“This is an issue from three years ago regarding money raised from joint-fundraising accounts. The MDP has returned the money and partnered with the FEC to ensure compliance with campaign finance rules,” said MDP spokesperson Christian Slater.
