DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Boston scored late in the third period to seal a 3-2 win over Detroit after the Red Wings had an early 2-0 lead. Boston hit the 50-win milestone becoming the fastest team in NHL history to reach that goal in a season.

“You build off the things you did in the first and third. We’ll learn from this,” said head coach Derek Lalonde.

Detroit scored early right in the first period at 1:36 when Andrew Copp scored on a shorthand goal. Alex Chiasson then followed at 4:32 for his first goal as a Red Wing on a power play for the 2-0 lead. It was only the second time in franchise history that Detroit had a short hand and power play goal  in the first five minutes of the game.

In the second period, Boston scored twice in less than two minutes at 12:43 and 14:11 to tie the game at two. The first goal came on even strength and then followed with a power play goal to tie it. It wasn’t until 13:54 in the third period that the Bruins took the lead for good holding of Detroit, 3-2.

Magnus Helberg was in goal and had 35 saves. Detroit is now 29-27-9 with 67 points.

Lalonde also said, “The second period burnt us. We had a really good first and I liked our third. It’s just the second, probably the penalties. Our four penalties happened in the first 30, 35 minutes. It’s just too much on our group and gives their top guys too much momentum. It’s unfortunate because we had a really good opportunity today.”

Detroit will be at home vs. Boston on Sunday afternoon in Little Caesars Arena.
