LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – According to a new AAA survey, nearly 80% of Michiganders plan to travel this year—up 17% from last year. More than a quarter of Michiganders will be traveling over spring break, which is also a jump from last year’s 24%.

Debbie Haas, Vice President of Travel for AAA’s Auto Club Group, says AAA is expecting one of the busiest spring break seasons in years. “Previous spring travel seasons were affected by COVID-19,” she said. “However, Americans are largely more confident about traveling again, and AAA has seen very strong bookings for beach destinations, cruises, and attractions.”

Within the US, Florida is the favorite destination for spring break travelers. Cruises departing from Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and Tampa were the most popular among AAA’s cruise booking options. Travelers are largely opting for warm-weather beach vacations this year, but cruises to cold-weather locations, such as Alaska, Canada, and Northern Europe, have also increased in popularity.

More Americans are traveling internationally for spring break this year, taking advantage of a favorable overseas exchange rate. International bookings for spring break are up 30% compared to last year. In Europe, Paris is the top destination, while those who preferred a “unique cruise” headed to Bahrain, Papua New Guinea, or the Danube River.

For the 13% of Michiganders who haven’t made spring break plans yet, AAA says it’s not too late to travel. “If traveling with kids, look for hotels with indoor swimming pools,” the site recommends. “Research destinations that are within driving distance and offer free museums or outdoor attractions.”

AAA also warns that travelers are booking trips further in advance than usual, driving up airline ticket prices and hotel rates. To avoid higher costs, travelers are encouraged to start making summer plans early. AAA offers a free online travel tool called Trip Canvas that can help with researching destinations and booking accommodations.
