DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Lawnstarter, a lawn care company with locations across the country, has ranked Detroit as the 4th dirtiest city in the United States. They came to this conclusion after comparing pollution levels, living conditions, infrastructure and consumer satisfaction in 152 of America’s largest cities.
After comparing the big cities in the country, Lawnstarter reported that Houston, Texas ranked #1 as the dirtiest city, followed by Newark, New Jersey; San Bernardino, California; then Detroit and after that, Jersey City, NJ.

Lawnstarter says about their list of dirty cities, “Depending on where you live, you may want to buy some air fresheners, mouse traps, or a can of Raid.”
According to The Daily Mail, all five of the dirtiest cities have Democrat mayors. The cleanest city, Virginia, Beach, Virginia, is run by a Republican. Detroit, which is run by Democrat Mayor Mike Duggan, also has had a homicide spike over the past year and Detroit was ranked #5 as a top homicide hotspot out of 50 cities in the study done by finance website WalletHub. Detroit was also ranked #2 with the highest increase in homicide rates. Because of the crime and vagrancy, Starbucks recently closed a midtown Detroit location, the oldest corporate-owned Starbucks in the city.
In January, Lawnstarter also named Detroit as “among worst U.S. cities to walk your dog” based on the number of dog trails, walk score, dog park quality and crime index. They came in at #7 on the list of ten bad cities for dog walking.
So what does Detroit have going for it? Why should people visit or live in a city that is perceived as being dirty and crime-ridden? According to The Detroit News, Detroit offers a revived riverfront that has turned into a tourist destination. And, of course, they offer the Detroit Lions, Pistons, Tigers, and Red Wings. As reported by Click on Detroit, Detroit also has some great pizza.
According to the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau (DMCVB), also known as Visit Detroit, Detroit has a lot to offer and they point to a TIME article that picked Detroit as one of their 50 “world’s greatest places of 2022.”
Visit Detroit President and CEO Claude Molinari says, “Visitors come to Detroit to experience our world-changing music scene, the heartbeat of American innovation, and vibrant culinary possibilities, but they fall in love with the people and the stories of our region.”
David Lorenz, Vice President, Travel Michigan says, “Detroit has become a beloved destination for travelers from across the globe. There’s something magical about experiencing the birthplace of the American automobile industry, exploring the legendary Motown music scene, experiencing the delectable culinary creations and so much more that the city has to offer.”
Just don’t forget to take your air fresheners with you when you travel there. And maybe some pepper spray.
