EAST LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – MSU Police confirmed at a Tuesday morning press conference that the singular shooter involved in the incident on the campus of Michigan State University on Monday night turned the gun on himself as he was confronted by police.
Chris Rozman, Interim Deputy Chief Michigan State University Department of Police and Public Safety revealed that the 43 year old suspect described in last night’s press conference, and whose released photo helped police locate the suspect, was identified as Anthony Dwayne McRae.

The shooter had no past or present ties to the campus either as a student, faculty member, or staff according to Rozman.
Rozman also conveyed that the three deceased from last night were all students from MSU, as were all of the five that were hospitalized.
Four of the five individuals who were transported to Sparrow required surgical intervention according to Dr. Denny Martin, Acting President and Chief Medical Officer E.W. Sparrow Hospital, and as of this morning all five are in critical condition.
Along with Michigan State University Police, several departments from the area also responded to calls last night, providing hundreds of officers according to Rozman. The FBI also came to aid in the active shooter situation.
“First of all our hearts go out to all the victims, their families, the students, and the community- this happens much too often,” Jim Tarasca, Special Agent in charge of FBI in Michigan said, “Thank you to all our partners in law enforcement, and once again thank you Marlon Lynch [Vice President of Public Safety and Chief of MSU Police Department] for your leadership; a great example of leadership last night from all the agents who showed up and showed their selfless sacrifice to attempt to find and identify the suspect, and eliminate the threat.”
During a Q & A after the morning press conference, Deputy Chief Rozman revealed that a tip from a citizen after law enforcement released an image of the suspect led to finding the suspect.

“We had MSU Police and Public Safety Investigators reviewing surveillance footage and they quickly determined that we had a picture of the suspect and we quickly disseminated that publicly and it was shortly after we released it that he was recognized by an informed citizen,” Rozman said.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and U.S. Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin (D-Lansing) also attended the press conference and shared their thoughts on the incident.
“We know this is a uniquely American problem,” Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said at the press conference, “Today is the fifth anniversary of the Parkland Shooting, we’re mere weeks past the Lunar New Year Shooting, and a few months past a shooting at a school in Uvalde, looking back at a year marked by shootings in grocery stores, parades, and so many other ordinary everyday situations- we cannot keep living like this.”
Slotkin also took to the podium to share her thoughts on law enforcement’s response to the situation.
“I want to echo what the Governor said about the response of law enforcement, those of you who might have been listening on the scanner you heard how deeply complex this operation was yesterday with young people calling in tips constantly, with an unbelievably difficult area and environment to navigate law enforcement did an incredible job. We had hundreds respond from across the state and I think it’s a testament to those who hold the thin blue line for us, the ones who do not hesitate when we need them and I think we should recognize how desperately needed they were last night and in our society in general.”
Rozman did not release any of the identities of the students out of respect to the families who will be notified later today ahead of a public revealing of their names.
