EAST LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Making nine three-pointers shooting 45 percent beyond the arc, Michigan State held off Maryland, 63-58, moving to 15-9 on the year. The win puts the Spartans tying Maryland in the Big Ten at 7-6.
Joey Hauser led the way with 20 points making three three-pointers as Tyson Walker added 17 points with three three-pointers, too. A.J. Hoggard finished with 10 rebounds and eight points. Jahmir Young posted 17 points for Maryland.
MSU shot 44 percent overall as Maryland made just 39 percent of their shots. They were held to just 13 percent from three-point range going 3-of-22. Maryland did take the rebounding game, 31-30.
Taking a 15-0 lead to start the first three and half minutes of the game, MSU looked as if they would run away with the game. Mady Sissoko had a jumper at 16:32 to make it 15-0. Maryland cut the lead to eight, 16-8, at 10:40, and then MSU finally made a bucket after an almost seven minute drought, 19-8, on a Malik Hall three-pointer. With 4:03 left in the half, Maryland pulled to within five, 24-19. MSU would go on to take a halftime lead of nine, 31-22.
MSU pushed their lead back to double digits at 12 points, 36-24, on a Walker three-pointer at 16:44. Maryland responded over the next four minutes on a 16-2 run to take the lead, 40-38, with 12:37 left to play. There were three ties in the next two and half minutes before Maryland had a four-point lead, 48-44 (9:15). MSU answered with a 8-0 run in a minute and a half retaking the lead, 52-48, at 7:44. Maryland cut the lead down to two, 52-50, but MSU had another short run, 7-2, for a seven-point lead, 59-52, with 2:48 remaining. Maryland had the lead down to two points, 59-57, with 32 seconds left, but missed a free throw and then fouled Hoggard who hit both free throws. After Maryland made just one free throw, Jaden Akins finished the game with a dunk at four seconds on the clock as MSU won the game, 63-58.
MSU will head to Columbus, Ohio, on Sunday to face Ohio State at 1:00 p.m.
