In a Wednesday evening press release, Gov. Whitmer announced the “MI Kids Back on Track” plan would bolster tutor programs. Her office said it builds on federal COVID-19 relief funds to address “unfinished learning.”

The state of Michigan continues to reel from Gov. Whitmer’s COVID-19 lockdowns which shut schools down from March 2020 through June 2020 in a three-week effort to flatten the curve. The governor closed schools again in November 2020 for the same reasons.

A report released this month by Education Trust-Midwest shows Michigan ranks in the bottom 10 U.S. states for fourth grade reading.

According to the report, this trend is projected to remain in a holding pattern until 2030 unless “dramatic, research-backed changes are made to address the state’s growing education crisis and worsening opportunity gaps for underserved students.”
