LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) issued a statement advising people to limit how much rainbow smelt they eat from the Great Lakes due to elevated PFAS contaminate levels.
Officials also said the warning applies to some inland lakes.

The state is advising people not to eat more than six servings of smelt from Lake Huron every year and limit consumption of Lake Michigan smelt to one serving a month.
People should also limit smelt consumption from Portage Lake in Houghton County to one serving a month; Gull Lake in Kalamazoo County to two servings a month; and Higgins Lake in Roscommon County to four servings per month.
