EAST LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A 13-4 run to end the first half for Michigan State lead of nine points led to the 59-53 victory over rival Michigan on Saturday afternoon. MSU had three players score in double figures and held Michigan to making just three three-pointers.

A.J. Hoggard and Malik Hall led MSU with 15 points as Tyson Walker added 14 points. Joey Hauser grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the team. Michigan’s Hunter Dickinson led all scorers with 18 points and had seven rebounds. Kobe Bufkin also had 15 points and Jett Howard 10 points.

In a low scoring first half, the game was tied at 14 with 5:08 to play. In the next four minutes, MSU went on an 11-2 run for a nine-point lead, 25-16, as Jaden Akins made one free throw for the biggest lead of the half. MSU finished the final five minutes on a 13-4 run for a 27-18 lead. Hall made two free throws with no time left in the half to push the lead to nine.

Hauser made it a 14-point lead to begin the second half, 32-18, on a jumper at 18:46. With 8:59 left in the game, Hoggard continued the 14-point lead on a jumper, 42-28. Michigan responded on a 9-2 run to pull within seven points, 44-37, on a Dickinson jumper. Bufkin then brought Michigan within six, 47-41, on a fast break layup with 4:34 to play. Jett cut MSU’s lead to four-points, 47-43, on two free throws 39 seconds later but that is as close as the Wolverines would come in the final four minutes. Dickinson hit a three-pointer with 13 seconds left as Michigan was once again within four, 57-53, but a another missed shot and two MSU free throws gave the Spartans the 59-53 win.

MSU is now 11-4 on the year and 3-1 in the Big Ten as they head to Madison, Wisc., on January 10 for a meeting with the Badgers. Michigan falls to 9-6 overall and 3-1 in the Big Ten and will play at Iowa on January 12.
