Detroit gave up four goals in the first 19 minutes of the game to go down early, 4-0. It was the Detroit resilience that led to the comeback. Head coach Derek Lalonde says, “Our approach in the second was we just talked about trying to build our game after the first. We did that, we were better and I thought we got what we deserved. We were really good for 40 minutes. We won both periods, 2-0, and then found a way in overtime.”

A net change took place to begin the second period as Magnus Hellberg came in for Ville Husso. Hellberg shutout the Penguins recording 19 saves for the win going to 2-1 overall.

Dylan Larkin netted the first goal in the second period on Detroit’s second power play of the game at 7:17. He put in the goal after a bounce off the boards to cut the lead to three, 4-1. Joe Veleno then added the second goal of the game with 14:32 on the clock on an assist from Ben Chiarot.

In the third period, at 15:00, Jonatan Berggren had the puck bounce his way after Pittsburgh tried to steal it giving him a shot in front of the goal to cut it to a one-goal game, 4-3. Under two minutes later, David Perron recorded the game tying goal (16:52) who buried the shot on the top-shelf to make it a 4-4 tie.

Walman then had the game winning goal in overtime as Detroit improved to 15-11-7 (37 points) on the year.

Lalonde said, “I just think it’s a message, you play the right way when you have an opportunity. We’re not good enough to have lapses in our game, which you saw in the first period. That’s no knock on the guys, I think they understand that. We just have to be really sharp at all times to be successful, which we were obviously in the last 40 minutes.”
