ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Holding off No. 4 Northwestern University, No. 6 Michigan came away with a 2-1 win in Columbus winning the 2022 Big Ten Field Hockey Championship. The Wolverines defeated three top 10 teams in No. 9 Iowa (3-1), No. 3 Penn State (2-1), and Northwestern to win the title.

Kathryn Peterson was named the Big Ten Tournament MVP and Katie Anderson made the All-Tournament team. This was the third straight year that Michigan has been in the championship game winning it twice.

Kate McLauhglin scored at the 12:04 mark in the first quarter on a tip goal. Brynn Zorilla made it 2-0 in the third quarter at 34:55 off a penalty corner rebounding it off a shot from Lora Clarke. Northwestern then cut the lead to one at the 54:55 market and then tried to tie the game up in the final minutes but Michigan’s defense held for the win.

Michigan out shot Northwestern, 17-10, and the Wildcats only had one shot on goal. Michigan added eight shots on goal.

Earning the automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament, Michigan will see where they will go in the 18-team tournament.
