PORTAGE, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Former Vice President Mike Pence will be visiting Michigan on Friday, November 4 to help stump for Republican candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives.

Pence will first stop in at the Traveler’s Cafe and Pub in Portage where he will join U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga.  The “Faith and Freedom Rally” event will begin at 1 p.m., and the doors will open at 12:30 pm.  Those wishing to attend must RSVP online to get a ticket

Huizenga, currently in his sixth term, represents Michigan’s 2nd Congressional District, and was first elected to congress in 2010.  He was one of the founding members of the bipartisan PFAS Task Force and has helped to educate other members of congress of the dangers while helping to craft legislation to combat the contamination.

Following the redistricting of Michigan, Huizenga’s territory now extends beyond his previous district. Now it encompasses Holland, Hudsonville, the Jenison area, and Zeeland.  It also includes Benton Harbor, Kalamazoo, Portage, Battle Creek, and parts of Ottawa County.  The new territory initially put him in competition with Republican candidates Fred Upton and Steve Carra. Upton announced his retirement, and Carra dropped out of the race which left Huizenga as the only Republican candidate in the race.

“I don’t take anybody or anything for granted,” he said. “You can’t go into a new territory and just make assumptions that people know who you are or know what you stand for or know what your track record is,” Huizenga said

Pence is also expected to pay a  visit to Charlotte, to help campaign for Tom Barrett, a Republican from the 7th Congressional District who is challenging the Democratic incumbent Rep. Elissa Slotkin.  Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney visited Michigan Tuesday to campaign for Slotkin.

Both Barrett and Slotkin have previous experience in the legislature and military, though some of their biggest legislative differences pertain to abortion and gun laws.
