GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – After two days of witness testimony, a judge announced on Friday that he would take the weekend to mull his final decision on whether to send former GRPD Officer Christopher Schurr’s case to trial.

Judge Nicholas Ayoub will announce his decision on Monday.

Seven witnesses testified on Thursday, followed by one witness on Friday. The prosecution and defense offered closing motions as well.

The preliminary hearing comes seven months after Schurr shot and killed a motorist during a traffic stop in Grand Rapids on April 4. Schurr is facing second degree murder charges for the death of 26-year-old Patrick Lyoya.

Schurr said he pulled over Lyoya’s vehicle because his plates did not match. He said Lyoya resisted arrest, and reached for his taser. Schurr said he feared for his life. Lyoya’s toxicology results revealed his blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit when he was pilled over.

Schurr faces the possibility of life in prison if his case goes to trial and he’s convicted.
