DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Earning their third win of the year in five games, Detroit walloped Anaheim, 5-1, and are now 3-2 on the year. Both of the losses, though, are overtime losses to Los Angeles Kings and Chicago Blackhawks.

Dominik Kubalik led the Red Wings with three points on a goal and two assist moving his point streak to five games. That streak is the most to start a five-game season since Paul Coffey did it with 10 points in 1993. Also adding to the scoring was Dylan Larkin with a goal and assist while David Perron, Elmer Soderblom, and Joe Veleno all added a goal.

Larking scored first at 2:02 in the first period on a power play. Anaheim tied it up at 5:31 but Perron gave the Red Wings a 2-1 lead at the 13:28 mark. Veleno made it 3-1 in the second period (4:07) and then in third period Kubalik (3:44) and Soderblom (14:24) finished off the scoring. In the game, Detroit was 3-for-5 in power play situations scoring.

Head coach Derek Lalonde says about the assists on the goals, “In this profession, we call this an assistant coach’s win because of the special teams. They were dynamite, and that’s all the work of Alex Tanguay and Jay Varady.” He then added about the depth on his team saying, “We need depth, and those goals are the perfect example. We’ve lost arguably two top-six forwards in (Robby) Fabbri and (Tyler) Bertuzzi. Throw (Jakub) Vrana in there and we’ve lost three of our top six. That’s going to hurt anyone and it is hurting us, but because of depth, we have a competitive lineup.”

Detroit will host New Jersey on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.
