GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Hot off taking back the Anchor-Bone Trophy, Grand Valley State University was named the #1 team in the nation by D2football.com in the newest poll. GVSU is now 7-0 on the year after holding off then #1 Ferris State, 22-21.

“I am happy for a lot of our seniors. They have stuck around for their fifth and six years due to CoVID and they played some of their best football of their careers on Saturday,” said head coach Matt Mitchell. “It was a really intense football game, highly competitive football game. Ferris State is a really good football team that won 43 regular season games. This was a clean game for both teams as there weren’t any personal fouls. Two of the top teams in the nation were competing at a high level and there was a lot of respect on both sides of the field for each other.”

Ferris State fell three spots to #4 in the nation after the loss and is now 5-1.

With the win for GVSU, it puts them in the driver’s seat for regional rankings and the post season for hosting games and winning the GLIAC. There are four regular season games left for GVSU as they host Northern Michigan on October 22 in Allendale.
