LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – U.S. and Michigan flags will be lowered to half-staff on Monday to honor the service of Private First-Class Lowell Smith.
Smith entered the U.S. Army from Michigan. On January 21, 1945, Smith was killed in action against German forces in France. His remains were not recovered or identified after the war.

Thanks to new efforts and new technology, Smith’s remains were identified this summer.
The lowering of the flags coincides with Smith’s burial in Michigan.
