EAST LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Scoring just seven points in the second half, Michigan State didn’t have the answer to one of the top offenses in the nation as they fell to Ohio State, 49-20. Ohio State scored 49 points in the first three quarters, including a 35-13 halftime lead, running away with the game.

“We are very disappointed in the outcome of the game,” said head coach Mel Tucker. “I’m just very disappointed in the outcome, obviously I’m not real happy right now.”

MSU was only down 14-7 at the end of the first quarter, but couldn’t match Ohio State’s talent. The Spartans finished the day with only 202 yards of offense but gave up 614 yards to the Buckeyes. Of the 202 yards, only seven yards came on the ground and 195 yards passing.

Tucker says, “We’re in the game (after the first quarter), but if we can’t get them stopped, then we won’t be in the game very long. That’s what happened.

Ohio State had the ball six times in the first half and scored on five with throwing one interception. All five touchdowns came on drives over 75-yards as the MSU defense had no answer for the Buckeye offense.

With a seven-point difference right at the end of first quarter, OSU took over with 2:13 to go. That drive started on MSU’s two-yard line. Eight plays later, the Buckeyes pushed their lead to 14, 21-7, as C.J. Stroud from Julian Fleming from 51-yards out. MSU did respond with a 76-yard drive to come within eight, 21-13 with 10:43 left in the second quarter but OSU scored on their next two possessions for the 35-13 halftime lead.

A key to the game was the Buckeye’s defense shutting down MSU’s run game. MSU rushed the ball 20 times by six different players but came away with just seven yards.

“We have to be able to run the ball. We can’t be a one-dimensional. Any time defensively you can make a team one dimensional and take away the run, and know that they have to throw the bal, you basicall have them where you want them,” said Tucker.

Charles Brantley was one of the exciting moments in the game for MSU as he intercepted Stroud in the first quarter for a pick-six to tie the game at seven. His interception went 32-yards with 8:32 left in the first.

With questions looming about the MSU season and with it will bring at 2-4 and 0-3, Tucker said he will not be making any personnel changes. “I’m not looking to make any changes from a coaching staff standpoint at all. Any changes we make , we’ll have to evaluate the tape.” He also commented on the rest of the season saying, “I want to see better execution in all three phases and consistent execution. And I want to see us prepare to get ready for this next game.”

MSU will host Wisconsin next Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in their homecoming game.
