LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Michigan Education Association (MEA), the state’s largest teacher’s union, is once again spending money to elect Democrats, including those running for the top spots of governor, attorney general, and secretary of state.
The most recent issue of “MEA Voice,” the official publication sent to all MEA members, boasts an “Election 2022 Pullout” and five pictures of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on the cover.
The “Election 2022 Pullout” lists what the magazine calls “Champions for Education,” MEA recommended candidates, and an absent voter ballot application.
In addition, it includes a series of pieces titled “Wave of Anti-LGBTQ Legislation Centers on Educators, Students.” The term “hateful rhetoric” is mentioned over and over when referring to those who challenge an LGBTQ agenda. What is not mentioned is how Attorney General Dana Nessel is an advocate for “drag queens in every school” despite her attempt to back peddle those comments.
MEA Voice Editor Brenda Ortega wrote a piece titled “Whitmer Offers Sharp Contrast to DeVos-backed Opponent” in which she argues why Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is the best choice for teachers.
“Perhaps a governor who appreciates the work of educators and the value of public education is not a radial concept,” Ortega writes. She argues against voting for Dixon because she is “a one-time actor and conservative commentator who previously worked at a steel company owned by her father…Dixon has never held elected office. Her children attend private schools.”
Ortega fails to mention that Gov. Whitmer shut down all public schools from March 2020 through June 2020 as part of her three-week effort to flatten the COVID-19 curve. In addition, Ortega leaves out that Gov. Whitmer shut down schools again in November 2020, citing the need to control a surge of the virus. There’s no mention of the state’s recent abysmal reading scores where 34% of Michigan third-grade students are not proficient in English Language Arts, according to the 2021- 2022 Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP) testing.
According to the MEA-PAC website, “dues dollars cannot be contributed to political candidates.” A list of how the money is spent can be found here.
