ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – In a closer than anticipated Big Ten Opener, Michigan held off the University of Maryland, 34-27, in the 2022 Homecoming game. It was Blake Corum that spurned the victory rushing for 243 yards on 30 carries. He is the first running back to reach 200 yards rushing since Karan Higdon did it in 2017 and post the most yards in a game last done by Denard Robinson in 2010 with 258 yards vs. Notre Dame.

“The o-line killed it today. We have the best o-line in the country and they make my job easy. They help me get to the second level and finish,” says Corrum. “This team is great and we are building something really special. Maryland was really good up front. They had some good athletes and played good as a team. It was definitely a great challenge for us.”

The game was exciting straight from the kickoff as Maryland’s Tai Felton fumbled the ball at the 10-yard line as Matthew Hibner recovered. J.J. McCarthy went right to work finding Luke Schoonmaker for a touchdown on the first play just eight seconds into the game. McCarthy went on to throw for 220 yards and one more touchdown in the game.

Maryland followed with an eight-play drive ending in a 53-yard field for their first score, 7-3. Four minutes later Jake Moody matched Maryland’s field with a 52-yard make to extend Michigan’s lead to seven, 10-3. Maryland then tied the game with 2:22 left in the first quarter on a two-yard run as the quarter ended in a 10-10 tie.

Chad Ryland made his second 50+ field goal of the game for Maryland from 52-yards to give them the lead, 13-10. Maryland played most of the second quarter with the lead until Corum rushed in from 33-yards out with 22 seconds left giving the Wolverines the 17-13 lead at the half.

Maryland had to play from behind the rest of the game. Neither team scored in the third quarter but then Michigan added three scored in the fourth. Corum gave Michigan a 15-point lead, 34-19, on a 47-yard run with 3:31 left in the game. Maryland pulled to within seven with 45 seconds left but couldn’t recover the onside kick.

“This was a great win and I am super happy about it. The best win ever. You may not have a better win. Now we will get onto Iowa,” says head coach Jim Harbaugh.
