TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The Farmers’ Almanac has been predicting weather for 231 years with 80% accuracy and their 2023 edition, which went on sale on August 30th, they predict a cold and snowy winter in the Midwest.
They recommend getting out the shovels and warm clothes in order to get ready for the winter of 2022-23 because winter in the Midwest will be “shivery and snowy,” especially in January.

They predict “The eastern half of the U.S. should brace for potentially record-breaking cold to define the season. This frigid forecast extends to the deep south and Texas, which could see the mercury diving as much as eight degrees F below normal.” In their map of the United States, Michigan falls in the “unreasonably cold snowy” shaded part of the map.
With the first day of winter coming soon on December 21st, and some stores already displaying Christmas decorations even before Halloween begins, winter is already on the minds of some Midwesterners. There was one snow-lover on the Farmers’ Almanac Facebook page who is looking forward to the wintery conditions. Kathy Harden Williams posted “Bring on the snow!!!!!” while most of the others were grumpy about the winter
predictions and not looking forward to the cold and snow.
By February of this year, there was near-average snow in Michigan for the 2021-22 winter season with a few exceptions including Muskegon which had about half of what they usually get and the Upper Peninsula with about 10 to 30% more snow.
The winter snow totals through February 24th, 2022 had Detroit up about 3”, Ann Arbor down 5.4”, Flint up 6”, Saginaw down 11”, Grand Rapids up 4.3”, Kalamazoo down 7.5”, Lansing up 6.4”, Traverse City up 2.5”, Houghton Lake down 13.5” and Marquette up 25.9.”
According to the National Weather Service, the temperatures for the same time period were pretty normal for Grand Rapids, Lansing, Muskegon and Kalamazoo.
