GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Those hoping to rid unwanted firearms from their household may bring them to the Grand Rapids buyback program on Sept. 17 to drop off their firearms anonymously with no questions asked.

The Grand Rapids Police Department and Safe Alliances for Everyone Task Force will host the program from 1 pm until 3 pm at Burton Heights Lot, located at 30 Burton Street Southwest.

Assault Rifle and Semi-Automatic Handguns will earn a $200 gift card, and revolvers, shotguns, and rifles will earn $100 gift cards.

Participants are asked to bring their functioning and well maintained guns to qualify for the program. While black powder firearms do not qualify for a gift card reward, they will be accepted by the department.

The Police Department requests that individuals bring their unloaded firearms in their trunk of vehicle. The department also asks that nobody contacts individual sites for information on the buyback program according to an informational flier.

Regardless of the number of firearms turned in, the department reports that it reserves the right to limit the number of gift cards given to individuals.

This event comes on the heels of two buyback programs in 2020 that provided gift cards for guns depending on their condition, that ranged from $50 to $200. These two programs yielded a total of 267 guns, and roughly $34,500 given out in the form of gift cards.

The SAFE Task Force has contributed $40,000 to fund this program. For information see the department’s flier.
