The Wolverines hired Tracy Smith as their new head coach on July 3 and then four days later added Ben Greenspan as the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator. Smith came to UM after a stint at Arizona State for seven years and four NCAA Regional Tournament appearances. He brings 805 career wins, produced 90 MLB Draft Picks, seven first-round draft picks, and coached in nine NCAA Regional Tournaments.

Smith is no stranger to the Big Ten after coaching nine seasons at Indiana where he was the 2013 National Coach of the Year. He won back-to-back Big Ten regular season and tournament championships in 2013 and 2014 going to the Men’s College World Series in 2013. Just one of three coaches to take three teams to the NCAA Tournament (Miami-Ohio, Indiana, Arizona State), he had a top 5 recruiting class at Arizona State in 2017 with it being rated number one on the West Coast.

Greenspan was on Smith’s staff at Arizona State and Indiana while playing two years for the Hoosiers  Most recently, he was at Cal Poly where the team was ranked as high as 18th nationally. He coached a pair of All-Americans  in Brooks Lee and Drew Thorpe as Lee won the Wallace Award as the nation’s top shortstop. Before Cal Poly, he had success in recruiting at Arizona State with four top-10 recruiting classes as the 2016 class was the number one class in the nation. He also had a hand in developing the overall number one 2020 MLB Draft pick, Spencer Torkelson who plays for the Detroit Tigers.

Smith and Greenspan have a great foundation to build off of as the Wolverines won the 2022 Big Ten Tournament Championship and went 2-2 in the NCAA Regional Tournament.
