WASHINGTON, D.C. (Michigan News Source) – Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Michigan House Speaker Matt Hall stood in the Oval Office with President Donald Trump on Wednesday afternoon. The president invited both to be in attendance during the signing of executive orders.

Whitmer had given a speech earlier in the day where she slammed tariffs. She gave the remarks before a private meeting with Speaker Hall and President Trump. Following her time in the Oval Office, a Whitmer spokesperson told the press, “The governor was surprised that she was brought into the Oval Office during President Trump’s press conference without any notice of the subject matter. Her presence is not an endorsement of the actions taken or statements made at that event.”
Speaker Hall called President Trump “a strong partner” and “a champion for Michigan.”

Whitmer continues to have her name tossed around as a potential presidential nominee in 2028. Her visit to Washington comes as parts of northern Michigan still wait for power to come back on more than a week after devastating ice storms.
