(Michigan News Source) – A Michigan couple, Paul and Christy Akeo, have been freed after nearly a month in a Mexican prison stemming from a disputed 2021 timeshare contract. Detained upon arriving in Cancún on March 4th, the Akeos were accused of fraud – charges their family and attorneys say were baseless, noting they had successfully disputed $117,000 in charges with American Express after Palace Resorts failed to deliver promised services.
U.S. Rep. Tom Barrett (R-Charlotte) played a key role in their release, flying to Mexico Wednesday to visit the couple in what he called “horrific” prison conditions. He met with Quintana Roo’s Supreme Court president to push for action. Their attorney praised Barrett as a “hero” and also credited former President Trump for assisting. The Akeos are currently en route back to Michigan.
