WASHINGTON, D.C. (Michigan News Source) –The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act passed the U.S. House on Thursday, but it did not receive the support of Michigan Democrats.

The SAVE Act would require proof of citizenship to register to vote. It would codify a recent executive order signed by President Donald Trump which targets election integrity.

The 220-208 vote included four Democrats who voted with Republicans to pass the measure. None of those Democrats included Michigan lawmakers Debbie Dingell, Kristen McDonald Rivet, Rashida Tlaib, Hillary Scholten, and Shri Thanedar.

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson has been an outspoken critic of the SAVE Act while running damage control after her department found 15 non-citizens voted in last November’s election. She issued a statement on Thursday, calling the SAVE Act a “dangerous step backwards.”

“This country has moved beyond the dark days of poll taxes, ‘literacy tests,’ and other shameful barriers designed to deny citizens the right to vote,” Benson said. “The burdensome, unnecessary requirements in the SAVE Act will have the same effect. This failed policy will take us back to a government where thousands of eligible voters will be turned away at the polls and where citizenship can be determined by the whims of politicians.” Benson has repeatedly said that finding documentation and paperwork for proof of citizenship would be burdensome.

The SAVE Act now heads to the U.S. Senate.
