DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – Coming up shy of their first home NBA playoff win since 2008, Detroit’s comeback in the second half fell short of a victory, dropping game three to New York, 118-116. Detroit was within one, twice, in the third quarter, but a run by New York put the lead back at 10. The Pistons were within one twice in the third quarter and once in the fourth.
Cade Cunningham led the Pistons with 24 points and 11 assists but missed 15 shots from the floor. Tim Hardaway, Jr., added 24 points, Dennis Schroder had 18, Jalen Duran 16, and Malik Beasley 12.

After holding Karl-Athony Towns and OG Anunoby to 10 points each in game two, the Knicks duo went off for a combined 53 points. Towns scored 31, and Anunoby had 22. Jalen Brunson scored 30 points and made 11 free throws.
Detroit was within six at the end of the first quarter, 33-27, only to see New York go on a 21-3 run, taking a 14-point lead at the half, 66-53. Duren found Ausar Thompson for a dunk at 7:12 in the third quarter to cut the lead to one, 70-69. Cunningham kept the Pistons within one, 72-71, just 40 seconds later on two free throws, but by 2:47, the Knicks had a 10-point lead, 86-76. The Knicks finished the third quarter leading by 10, 93-83.
The Knick’s lead was cut to four points early in the fourth, 94-91, but was back to 11 points, 102-91, at 6:56. Cunningham had a layup at 2:07 as Detroit was within three, 108-105, but didn’t get the shot to tie the game. New York took a six-point lead, 116-110, with 23.1 seconds left, and at 5.1 seconds, Detroit’s Hardaway, Jr., hit a three-pointer pulling within three. After a Detroit foul at 3.1 seconds, New York made one free throw for a four-point advantage, 117-113. Harris put Detroit back within striking distance on a three-pointer at 1.1 seconds, 117-116, and the Knicks made one free throw a 0.1. Detroit had a chance for a last-second shot, but Duren turned the ball over.
It was the eighth straight NBA playoff loss at home since 2008, one short of tying the record for the longest losing streak set by Philadelphia from 1968-1971.
Game four will be on Sunday in Detroit.
