LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – The seven northern Michigan counties hit hard by a March 29 ice storm have a combined 1,445 people still without power.

The power outage update is as of 10:09 a.m. Thursday, according to the PowerOutage.us website. The counties still without power included Montmorency (444 customers), Oscoda (435), Presque Isle (192), Cheboygan (128), Otsego (125), Alcona (75) and Alpena (46).

According to Michigan Sen. John Damoose (R-Harbor Springs), the ice storm knocked out power for 63,000 residents impacting a dozen counties while schools and businesses were without electricity.

Damoose said that all impacted schools were back in session as of April 14. Damoose introduced legislation that would allow the state superintendent to waive up to 10 additional school days for the schools hit by the ice storm.

“This is a quick, sensible solution, but is also something that will eliminate one of the many concerns these families and schools are currently facing,” Damoose said in a press release. “We need to fast-track this legislation so schools, parents and students can receive some certainty of what their schedules will look like as we continue to recover up north.”

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer declared a state of emergency on March 31 for 10 northern counties impacted by the storm.
