MONROE, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Monroe County Community College said that an internal survey of its practice of posting “gender-inclusive” restroom signs around campus were not “enhancing safety” and that led to the signs being removed.

Michigan News Source reported earlier that Michigan Republican Sen. Joseph Bellino applauded Monroe County Community College for taking down the signs.

“From the data we collected, it is clear that many feel that the restroom signs are not enhancing safety,” Monroe County Community College President Kojo A. Quartey said in an email to Michigan News Source. “It is also clear that people are concerned that bullying, harassment, and discrimination can extend beyond restrooms, so we will expand our efforts and create an anti-bullying campaign that is more general and does not focus solely on those spaces.  Meanwhile, the signs will be removed, as the college reinforces its commitment to protecting all members of the campus community in all spaces.”

Quartey continued: “The bottom line is that bullying, harassment, and discrimination will not be tolerated anywhere on our campus. This not only includes actions in the restrooms or in other spaces on campus but also communication among faculty, staff, and students that is discriminatory or harmful.”

Monroe County Community College has “single use/gender-inclusive restrooms” available in numerous facilities across the campus. There are three at the Campbell Academic Center and two each in Founders Hall, the Life Sciences Building and the Warrick Student Center.
