“I am deeply appreciative to President Trump and to the U.S. Senate for their trust and confidence in me,” Hoekstra said in a statement released by the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa. His appointment comes at a time when President Trump is working “America First” tariff deals with various countries, including Canada.
Hoekstra previously served as ambassador to the Netherlands during the first Trump administration, and lead the Michigan GOP when the state flipped red in November 2024.
