LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) Americans for Prosperity (AFP), a grassroots conservative advocacy non-profit organization, launched a substantial seven-figure advertising campaign on Thursday, April 3rd, highlighting what will be a tax day nightmare next year for American working families if Congress fails to renew the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA).

The Michigan chapter of AFP said in a press release that without renewal, the average Michigan family could see their taxes increase by approximately $2,000 by next year’s filing season.
AFP-MI’s State Director Tim Golding said in the press release, “The 2017 Trump tax cuts were the most pro-growth tax reform efforts in American history, and AFP was proud to work alongside President Trump and leaders in Congress to give hardworking Americans much needed relief.”
Golding went on to say, “AFP-MI is committed to reminding taxpayers that lawmakers like Senator Elissa Slotkin are standing in the way of extending the Trump tax cuts for Michigan families, workers, and small businesses so they keep more of their hard- earned money.”
What are they doing?
According to the AFP press release, in addition to the digital and radio ads, AFP state chapters will be hosting dozens of grassroots rallies and events across the country and meeting with Members of Congress to underscore the urgency to act. The campaign will leverage national attention around Tax Day (April 15th) to drive awareness of the thousands of dollars everyday families could be on the hook for next year if the tax cuts expired.
Grassroots group throws a $20 million punch.
AFP’s latest ad blitz isn’t just a quick jab; it’s part of a broader $20 million national campaign, making AFP the heavyweight champ among limited-government conservative groups rallying to keep Trump’s signature tax legislation alive. With nearly 30 million voters reached already, AFP clearly believes that extending the TCJA is the financial lifeline American families need.
Public opinion strongly favors maintaining current tax rates.
A poll done in September 2024 by Americans for Prosperity reveals that 90% of Americans oppose tax hikes and prefer to maintain their current tax rates. Additionally, over three-quarters believe that now is a bad time to increase taxes. The survey also indicates that a majority think failing to renew the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act would negatively impact middle-class families, small businesses, consumers, and the broader economy. Furthermore, 78% express concern that raising taxes on businesses would lead to higher prices and further strain family budgets.
