LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – Only 1.3 % of the calls in 2024 the Lansing Fire Department responded to were fires, with the vast majority of runs dealing with citizens having health emergencies.
The Lansing Fire Department also operates an Emergency Medical Services branch that has five paramedic advanced life support ambulances.

The EMS division of the fire department went on 21,288 runs in 2024 while the fire engines went on 5,645 calls.
A recent city report stated 79% of the fire calls were “rescue and emergency” and the fire department said the most common causes were “abdominal pain,” “acute respiratory distress,” “alcohol intoxication”, “chest pain” and “generalized weakness.”
The city stated 4.1% of calls were false alarms or false calls.
The Lansing data follows a national trend on calls for emergency service. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, just 3.9% of all emergency calls were related to fires in 2023. Nationwide, Emergency Medical Services and Rescue calls accounted for 65.2% of all calls.
Lansing’s fire department has a $43.2 million a year budget 2025, the third largest expenditure in the city behind public service ($119.4 million) and the police ($57.5 million).
The city of Lansing had 78 structure fires and 13 vehicle fires in 2024, including 24 arson investigations.
