DETROIT (Michigan News Source) – The city of Detroit is conducting a feasibility study on implementing a municipal tax on short-term rental properties, such as Airbnb.
City Council Member Mary Waters requested the Legislative Policy Division compile the study that would answer what impact such a tax would have on the local housing market, tourism industry and city revenues as well as if any legislative actions are required for the city to impose such a tax.

Throughout the state, short-term rentals are a source of controversy. Some communities have banned short-term rentals.
Last year, the Democrats introduced a series of bills that would make short-term rentals subject to the same taxes that hotel rooms face. The bills never made it out of committee.
