LANSING, Mich. (Michigan News Source) – A group looking to shore-up election and voter integrity in Michigan received approval from the Michigan Board of State Canvassers for its proposal language.
The Committee to Protect Voters’ Rights wants to amend the Michigan constitution to require voters to show proof of citizenship before registering to vote. The amendment would require showing a birth certificate, passport, or other citizenship-verifying documents when registering to vote.

Currently, the state of Michigan allows people to sign an affidavit as an alternative for those without a photo ID when voting. This proposal would eliminate that option.
Opponents argue the measure disenfranchises legal voters.
Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and her department recently concluded that 15 noncitizens voted in the last election.
Petition gatherers must now collect more than 445,000 signatures to get the measure on the ballot.
